Abstract

This research aims to understand which are the occupational hazards and their consequences on domestic workers´wellbeing in Uruguay considering their migrant condition, ethno-national origin, contract and residence characteristics. This research will provide information and awareness of which are the occupational hazards affecting the domestic staff´s health. To this extent, it will incorporate the analysis of individual variables that could potentiate the loss of wellbeing of the workers due to working conditions.

Specifically, this study seeks the understanding of the main labour risks to which this domestic workers are exposed in Uruguay, the prevalence of these risks, and how they affect the workers’ wellbeing in relation to their ethnicity, and migratory, employability and residency status. In addition, as a complementary approach, it will seek for workers’ main narratives about how these conditions are experienced and constructed.

This study will include the participation of unionised domestic workers, as well as other workers contacted through the union and other social spaces where they interact. It will be conducted as an exploratory and descriptive study, with a combined methodological approach using questionnaires and qualitative techniques. The mix of both techniques will provide both the quantification and the comprehension of how this phenomenon is experienced by the workers.
