In another study, Watts et al. [203] found PKC in intact and endothelium-denuded rabbit mesenteric artery preparations following exposure of rabbits to Pb acetate at 10−10 to 10−3 M concentrations. They found that Pb-induced vasoconstriction was augmented by a PKC agonist, reduced by a PKC inhibitor, and attenuated by the Ca2+ channel blocker verapamil.

Further, Watts et al. [23] found that blockage of protein kinase c (PKC), or voltage gated Ca2+ channels diminished the Pb-induced vasoconstriction in intact and endothelium-denuded rabbit mesenteric artery. The ability of Pb to affect Ca homeostasis was also observed by Anetor et al. [24] who found significant hypocalcemia in Pb-exposed workers.

Moreover, alterations in calcium exchangeability (Goldstein, 1993), inhibition of the Na+/K+-ATPase (Weiler et al., 1990), direct activation of smooth muscle protein kinase C (Watts et al., 1995) and endothelial dysfunction (Silveira et al., 2014) have also been reported. It has been demonstrated that alterations in vascular tone are possibly involved in lead-induced hypertension (Marques et al., 2001).
