  • Mortality of US pentachlorophenol production workers through 2005

    Citation Excerpt :

Lung cancer mortality was not significantly elevated for workers employed at the other three plants. Our a priori hypotheses were that based on human studies (Hardell and Sandstrom, 1979; Pearce et al., 1986; Smith and Pearce, 1986; Woods et al., 1987; Costantini et al., 1989; Roberts, 1990; Rugman and Cosstick, 1990), the SMRs for aplastic anemia, NHL and other lymphatic and hematopoietic cancer, and soft-tissue sarcoma would be elevated. We also hypothesized that the cohort would have elevated standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for liver, adrenal, thyroid, and parathyroid cancer, and leukemia, as suggested by animal studies done with technical grade PCP containing other chlorophenols, dibenzodioxins, and dibenzofurans (NTP, 1989).
