2006, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Previously, it was shown (Benowitz et al., 2003) that cigarette smoking significantly induced the metabolism of chlorzoxazone, presumably by inducing hepatic CYP2E1. Tobacco smoke also enhances CYP2E1 expression in mouse lung (Villard et al., 1994) and kidneys (Seree et al., 1996). Nicotine may be one component of tobacco smoke which can increase levels of CYP2E1, as found in smokers, since we have shown that it can increase CYP2E1 in rat liver and brain (Howard et al., 2001, 2003).
