‡The narrow mesothelioma case definition identified any fee-for-service beneficiary with at least one inpatient claim or ≥2 other claims (outpatient, hospice, home health agency, skilled nursing facility or carrier) including the ICD-10-CM code C45 and a Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System code or an ICD-CM procedure code for a mesothelioma diagnostic procedure.
§Prevalence rate is the number of unique prevalent cases divided by the number of fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries.
¶Incidence is calculated from 2017 to 2019. Incident cases had at least 1 year of continuous Medicare coverage and no mesothelioma claims prior to their first mesothelioma claim. The denominator for the incidence rate is the fee-for-service beneficiaries with 1 year of continuous fee-for-service Medicare enrolment prior to the incidence year.
