Methods available for identifying populations at risk from airborne pollutants

• Physical monitoring and modelling
    Air monitoring of the plume
    Wind tunnel experiments using scale models of the pollution source and surroundings
• Environmental monitoring and modelling
    Soil, vegetation, air, or water sampling at various sites
    Contour plots drawn using the information derived from the sampling sites that identify exposed populations
• Mathematical modelling
    Geometric patterns such as concentric rings of varying radii
    Wind direction and distance from point source calculated for several sites and theoretical contour plots calculated defining exposed populations; such models may also include information about the height and temperature of the fumestack, composition of the waste being burnt etc
