Surgery-Related Contact Dermatitis: A Review of Potential Irritants and Allergens
2017, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In PracticeCitation Excerpt :Contact dermatitis due to rubber gloves, however, occurs by a different mechanism that does not involve the latex component. Instead, delayed hypersensitivity reactions are due to sensitization to rubber accelerants, including mercapto compounds, thiurams, thioureas, and carbamates, that improve elasticity of rubber products and prevent fracturing.39 Because of increased risk of NRL sensitization in health care workers relative to the general population, there is now a mandate for latex-free alternatives.

2009, Dermatologic ClinicsCitation Excerpt :Work-up for patients with a history of urticaria from gloves should include a radioallergosorbent test to the latex protein, Hevea braziliensis (which is not entirely sensitive because of differences in the latex proteins from different sources), and testing of pieces of the glove. Prick or scratch testing should be performed only with the presence of appropriate emergency assistance because of the risk for anaphylaxis.11 Atopic dermatitis patients often react to occlusion with inflammatory response12 and may exhibit the same pattern of dermatitis as do patients with glove allergy.
