2012, Livestock ScienceCitation Excerpt :Propanol is an important intermediate in the ruminal metabolism of PG to propionate (Cozzi et al., 1996; Czerkawski et al., 1984), and PG has also been found to increase the glucogenic status in the cow (Kristensen and Raun, 2007; Palmquist and Brunengraber, 1997). However, PG is suggested to be glucogenic not only in the classic sense (Krebs, 1963), but also by inducing insulin resistance in muscle tissue (Lomeo et al., 1988; Xu et al., 1998). It has previously been speculated that propanol might be involved in inducing insulin resistance after intraruminal dosing of propylene glycol (Kristensen and Raun, 2007), but this cannot be sustained by the present study.
