2021, Clinics in Plastic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :The risk of LMM may be proportional to the size of the lesion, and large LM lesions can have small foci of invasive melanoma. Increasing color variation, expanding lesion, increasing border irregularity, elevation, and white macular areas signaling regression are changes considered suspicious for malignant transformation.18 The histology of LM shows a proliferation of atypical melanocytes along the dermal-epidermal junction with bridging of the rete pegs, epidermal atrophy, extension down adnexal structures, and a background of solar elastosis.
Lentigo Maligna
2021, Clinics in Plastic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Overall, the prognosis for LM is excellent. LMM tends to be thinner than other subtypes of melanoma at presentation, which results in more favorable outcomes, but there is no difference in survival when controlling for thickness of tumor invasion.5,14 One study reported the 5-year disease-related survival rates for LM and LMM were 100% and 97.1%, respectively.49
